LECTURE'S STRIKE IN KENYA
In recent weeks, lecturers had decided to suspend their strike after the government promised to fulfill their demands. However, the period of their agreement has now elapsed, and the government has yet to fulfill its promise to pay salaries on time, along with the additional pay increase they had requested. This has led to a halt in academic activities in public universities, leaving students in limbo, with some forced to return home.
For instance, at Kibabii University, lecture halls are left with empty seats and no students. Other campus areas that are usually bustling with students are unusually quiet today. Lecturers, who would typically arrive on campus early to teach, have been seen attending to other activities.
Despite the agreement with the government, Their needs have not been met, and they remain unfulfilled to this day, which has led lecturers to return to the strike. This strike significantly disrupts the academic calendar and schedules. For example, students expected to graduate this year might face challenges if exams are postponed to next year."
It is essential for the government to heed the lecturers' grievances and address them as swiftly as possible. Frequent strikes across different sectors delay the provision of crucial services to citizens and weaken the education system.
